This is part 3 of three: Part 1: the seven Spirits of Christ · Part 2: seven operations, from prayer to servanthood · Part 3: seven more operations, from the fear of the Lord to glory.
Module 3: Diverse manifestations of the Holy Ghost, part 2
1. The Spirit of the fear of the Lord
Key texts: Isaiah 11:1-2; Job 28:7-25; Psalm 111:10; Psalm 104:24.
- Every provision of redemption requires the operation of the fear of the Lord. "Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man"; "perfecting holiness in the fear of God" (Ecclesiastes 12:13; 2 Corinthians 7:1).
- Living in the fear of God is the foundation for a glorious destiny. "Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity... a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use" (2 Timothy 2:19-21).
- The fear of God quickens our understanding, enhancing our access to the deep things of God that pave the way to our high places in life. "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom"; "the secret of the LORD is with them that fear him" (Isaiah 11:3; Job 29:4-17; Proverbs 9:10; Psalm 25:14).
2. The Spirit of truth
Key texts: John 16:12-14; James 5:19-20; John 8:32.
- He reveals the truth contained in the word of God to the believer. "When he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth" (John 16:12-13).
- We are in the last days, when the spirit of error is on the loose. "Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error" (1 John 4:6).
- Therefore, to get the truth from the Book, we need the assistance of its author, who is the Holy Ghost. "Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" (2 Peter 1:21).
3. The Spirit of power
Key texts: Luke 4:14, 18-37; Luke 9:1, 6; Matthew 10:1, 7-8.
- We are redeemed as kings, but we must be anointed to be empowered to reign. The Lamb "hast made us unto our God kings and priests"; Elijah was sent to anoint kings; "thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power" (Revelation 5:9-10; 1 Kings 19:15-16; Psalm 110:1-3).
- We are redeemed to overcome, but we must be empowered by the Holy Ghost to live the overcomer's life. "Whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world"; "I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him"; "I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions" (1 John 5:4; Psalm 89:20-24; Luke 10:17-19).
- Ultimately, our mission on the earth cannot be fulfilled without power. "Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world"; "when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him" (1 John 4:20; Psalm 63:3; 1 John 4:4; Luke 11:21-22).
4. The Spirit of endurance
Key text: Romans 4:16-21.
- Every steward is called to endure hardness as a good soldier of Christ (2 Timothy 2:3-5).
- We need endurance to obtain the promises of Scripture. Paul went bound in the spirit to Jerusalem; Abraham, "after he had patiently endured, obtained the promise" (Acts 20:22; Hebrews 6:12-15).
- But we need the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to endure in season and out of season. "Every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things" (1 Corinthians 9:24-25; 1 Corinthians 10:15).
5. The Spirit of joy
Key texts: Isaiah 61:3; Psalm 45:6-8.
- The Holy Spirit is the fountain of joy and the oil of gladness. "The oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness"; "God... hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows" (Isaiah 61:3; Psalm 45:6-7).
- It is impossible to rejoice always and evermore without the Spirit of joy at work. "Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice"; "Rejoice evermore" (Philippians 4:4; 1 Thessalonians 5:16).
- Without joy, all the harvest of your labour and engagement may be lost. "The vine is dried up... because joy is withered away from the sons of men" (Joel 1:12).
6. The Spirit of grace
Key texts: Hebrews 4:16; Hebrews 10:29.
- The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of grace that empowers believers to operate beyond ourselves, particularly in stewardship. "I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me"; "great grace was upon them all" (1 Corinthians 15:10; Acts 4:33).
- For example, grace for delightsome obedience (Ezekiel 36:12, 27).
- Grace for tireless labour, the Spirit of might (Isaiah 11:2).
- Grace to access the voice behind the written Word, "the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him" (Ephesians 1:17-18).
7. The Spirit of glory
Key texts: Proverbs 11:30; Proverbs 3:35; 1 Peter 4:14.
- We have been called unto glory, but we must be anointed to ride the waves of glory. Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit and "there went out a fame of him"; at Pentecost three thousand were added; the council "marvelled" at unlearned men (Luke 4:14, 37; Acts 2:1-41; Acts 4:13-21).
- In addition, by redemption we have been justified to be glorified. "Whom he justified, them he also glorified" (Romans 5:9; Romans 8:29-30).
- But we can only ride the waves of glory by engaging the diverse operations of the Holy Spirit. "Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit" (Zechariah 4:6).

Questions this part answers
What is the spirit of the fear of the Lord?
One of the seven Spirits resting on Christ (Isaiah 11:2-3). It is the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10; Proverbs 9:10), the foundation of a glorious destiny (2 Timothy 2:19-21), and it quickens our understanding of the deep things of God (Psalm 25:14).
What are the fourteen operations of the Holy Spirit?
Prayer and supplication, wisdom and revelation, faith, love, obedience, might, servanthood, the fear of the Lord, truth, power, endurance, joy, grace and glory. The first seven are in part 2; the seven Spirits of Christ that stand behind them are in part 1.
What is the Spirit of glory?
"The spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you" (1 Peter 4:14). Believers are called to glory and justified to be glorified (Romans 8:29-30), but ride the waves of glory only by engaging the diverse operations of the Holy Spirit, "not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit" (Zechariah 4:6).
