Module 2: Diverse manifestations of the Holy Ghost, part 1
1. The Spirit of prayer and supplication
Key texts: Zechariah 12:10; Romans 8:26-27.
- The Holy Spirit keeps us spiritually alive and fervent in prayer. "Watch and pray"; "fervent in spirit... continuing instant in prayer" (Matthew 26:41; Romans 12:11-12).
- The Holy Spirit empowers us to pray according to the will of God. He "maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God," and prayers according to his will are heard (Romans 8:27; 1 John 5:14-15).
- Praying in the Holy Ghost connects us to the word in season, which illuminates our spirit man for conquest (Jude 20; 1 Corinthians 14:14-15; 2 Corinthians 12:7).
2. The Spirit of wisdom and revelation
Key texts: Isaiah 11:1-3; Ephesians 1:17-20; Isaiah 60:1-3.
- It is the move of the Holy Spirit within our spirit that empowers our access into the deep things of God, the things behind the veil. "There is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding"; "the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God" (Job 32:7-8; Romans 8:16; 1 Corinthians 2:9-10).
- The Holy Spirit imparts the Spirit of wisdom, which enhances our capacity to draw insight from what we see, hear, read or study. Solomon drew wisdom from the ant and the field; Daniel understood by books (Proverbs 6:6-9; Proverbs 24:27-30; 1 Kings 4:29-34; Daniel 9:2).
- We need the Spirit of wisdom and revelation to accomplish any given task. "If the iron be blunt... wisdom is profitable to direct" (Ecclesiastes 10:10).
3. The Spirit of faith
Key texts: John 6:26-28; 2 Corinthians 4:13; Jude 3, 20.
- The Holy Ghost deepens our insight into the word, which keeps our faith on fire for conquest. Jesus prayed that Peter's faith would not fail; "this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith"; the shield of faith quenches every fiery dart (Luke 22:31-32; 1 Corinthians 2:10-13; 1 John 5:4; Hebrews 11:32-34; Ephesians 6:16).
- As our faith comes alive, we are enabled to command signs and wonders. "This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent" (John 6:28-29).
- The Spirit of faith is the same from generation to generation. "We having the same spirit of faith... we also believe, and therefore speak" (2 Corinthians 4:13).
4. The Spirit of love
Key texts: 2 Timothy 1:6-7; 1 Corinthians 13:1-3; 1 Corinthians 2:9.
- To walk in perfect love is to be filled with all the fullness of God, which makes us more than conquerors over the battles of life. The three Hebrews loved God more than their lives and walked out of the fire (Ephesians 3:17-19; Daniel 3:14-28).
- Every addicted lover of God is ordained a pathfinder, pacesetter and trailblazer. "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard... the things which God hath prepared for them that love him"; love never fails (1 Corinthians 2:9; 1 Corinthians 13:8).
- We need the Spirit of love to sustain our love for God under all circumstances. Peter denied the Lord three times in one night, yet filled with the Spirit he stood boldly before the council (Matthew 26:34, 69-75; Acts 4:13, 20).
5. The Spirit of obedience
Key texts: Ezekiel 36:27; Job 36:11; John 14:21.
- The Bible recognises the place and power of the spirit of obedience. "I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes," set against "the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience" (Ezekiel 36:27; Ephesians 2:2).
- The spirit of obedience is a vital spiritual weapon with the capacity to win any war. Paul's weapons are mighty through God, "having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled" (2 Corinthians 10:3-6).
- The Spirit of obedience makes obeying God a delight, which causes the giant in one to rise. "Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments"; his delight is in the law of the LORD, and whatever he does prospers (Psalm 112:1-3; Psalm 1:2-3).
6. The Spirit of might
Key texts: Isaiah 11:1-3; Ephesians 3:16; John 4:32-34; Romans 8:11.
- We are in the last days of the strong and mighty in the body of Christ. Joel saw "a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like" (Joel 2:1-11).
- The Spirit of might shall be coming upon the end-time church after the order of Elijah, on whom "the hand of the LORD" came so that he outran Ahab's chariot to Jezreel (1 Kings 18:46).
- The Spirit of might is the standard against all forms of weakness, sickness and disease. The Spirit of the LORD moved Samson, came mightily upon him, and the cords on his arms became as flax burnt with fire (Judges 13:25; 14:5-6, 19; 15:14-15; 16:20, 25-30).
7. The Spirit of servanthood
Key texts: Isaiah 42:1-4; 1 Corinthians 15:58.
- We need the Spirit of servanthood to make the most of our stewardship. "Behold my servant, whom I uphold... I have put my spirit upon him" (Isaiah 42:1-7).
- It is the Spirit of servanthood that determines our ultimate accomplishments in life. Christ "took upon him the form of a servant... wherefore God also hath highly exalted him" (Philippians 2:5-11).
- This Spirit keeps us going in our stewardship without giving up, in spite of any form of shame or mockery. "Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not" (Galatians 6:7-9).
Questions this part answers
What is the spirit of prayer and supplication?
An operation of the Holy Spirit promised in Zechariah 12:10. The Spirit keeps believers spiritually alive and fervent in prayer, helps them pray according to the will of God (Romans 8:26-27), and praying in the Holy Ghost connects them to the word in season (Jude 20; 1 Corinthians 14:14-15).
What is the spirit of wisdom and revelation?
Paul prayed that the Ephesians would receive "the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him" (Ephesians 1:17-20). It is the Spirit's move within our spirit that opens the deep things of God (1 Corinthians 2:9-10) and sharpens the insight we draw from what we see, hear, read or study (Proverbs 24:27-30; Daniel 9:2).
What is the spirit of faith?
"We having the same spirit of faith... we also believe, and therefore speak" (2 Corinthians 4:13). The Holy Ghost deepens our insight into the word so that faith stays on fire, and living faith commands signs and wonders (John 6:28-29; 1 John 5:4).
